My favorite aviation books:
The Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics by H.C. Smith
One of the best books I have ever read, it covers everything you need to know about aerodynamics and the science of flight. Like Mach 1 and Beyond, this book is filled with diagrams to help you understand it better. Although it will be better understood by those familiar with physics, it is a good book for anyone with an interest in aerodynamics.
Storm Over Iraq by Richard Hallion
Written by the USAF historian, it is an excellent book on the history of airpower and how it evolved into the strategies used in the Gulf War. It covers everything from the early days of aerial combat to Iraq. It has many tables and battle diagrams and is packed with information.
Wings of Fury by Robert Wilcox
This book is about pilots from Vietnam to the Gulf, including Top Gun training and other wargame exercises. If you want to know what pilots go through in training and combat, and if you want a first-hand look at what it's like to fly and fight, this book is very good.
Fighter Wing by Tom Clancy
A good book on the structure, doctrine, and weapons of the US Air Force.
Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering by Robert Shaw
The bible on fighter tactics and maneuvering. An absolute necessity to read. Recommended to anyone with any interest in military aviation.
The Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge by Paul E. Illman
Your Pilot's Licence by Joe Christy
A great book for those seeking a pilot's license. A short, easy, and must read.
Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide
An excellent recognition guide with plenty of specs.
Pilot's Pocket Decoder by Chris J. Abbe
A great little book with definitions for just about every aviation acronym or abbreviation.
