Dead in the Water
The Main Legend
For the first time in episode 3 we have
no clever phenomena to blame for this episode (boo!). On the other hand though,
everything is clearly explained, and well within the limits of folklore, so there's
no big loss.
The central part of this episode is a ghost-spirit, who has started haunting the
water. In the way of a ghost, this one is bound to the water of the lake which it
was killed in as a human, giving it both great power over the water from the lake
(witness how it could affect people's house water supply), but also great limitation, (it can't reach from beyond the water). The idea of a vengeful ghost is a common theme really, (witness the White Lady in episode 1.)
There's two common ways to stop one:
Dean: If we’re gonna bring down this spirit, we need to find the remains, salt them, and burn them into dust.
Sam: If [the]...spirit got its revenge, case closed. The spirit should be at rest.
In addition to these ways, one can also occasionally exorcise the spirit,
or envoke it and try to reason with it (which almost always fails.)
Other Minor Legends
Water Wraith - When a Kelpie shape-shifts into a human (which is relatively rare), it almost always appears
as an old woman wearing a green dress. In this form she is just as dangerous as she
is in her horse form. When in this shape, a kelpie is known as the Water Wraith.
