Does Apolo know about the project?
Yes. On Jan. 15, 2003, the RMHC sent
Apolo a letter officially notifying him of
the project and its success. See a portion
of the letter below.
On behalf of Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Western
Washington (RMHC), we wanted to let you
know of an amazing accomplishment from
many of your fans across the US and
abroad . . . From June through
December 31, 2002, checks came to RMHC
for amounts ranging from $2 to $2,500! We
received allowance money from young
girls, as well as money from couples
that were also paying for their
children’s college educations.
We are happy to notify
you that the In Apolo’s Name
Project not only met their goal of
raising $10,000 but they surpassed it! We
received contributions from 108 donors
totaling more than $11,000! A
room in the residential wing of the new
House will be named after you and a
12” x 12” cement paver will be
engraved with “In Apolo’s Name
Project 2002” that will be placed in
one of four courtyards at the new House.
sincerely appreciate everything you have
done to help get the word out about the
Ronald McDonald House and what we do. Thank
you for your dedication to the Ronald
McDonald House and to the children and
families we serve.
Q: How will we know what is Apolo’s reaction?
If Apolo has any written reaction, we will post it on the site, of course. Otherwise, how he reacts will remain a mystery.
the In Apolo’s Name project over?
Yes. The last day to donate
was Dec. 31, 2002.
though the project is over, what if we still
want to send in money?
A: Hopefully, the project
inspired, sparked, and enlarged the
charitable drive in all of us. We hope you
will continue to donate to the RMHC whether
it is in Seattle or your own area. Maybe you
will even find time to volunteer for other
charities that interest you.
Q: Will this
site still be updated?
A: Yes. As long as there is
something new to report regarding the
effects of the project and the progress of
the new house construction, we will continue to
supply that information.
When is the grand opening?
A: The new house is scheduled
for completion in late Fall 2003. As far as
we have been told there is no public “grand opening” scheduled.
That doesn’t meant there won’t be. We
are sure the RMHC would love the show of
public support. We’ll report any new
information on the site as it comes along.
Does the media know about
A: Yes. Seattle media has been
notified about this project.
Q: What if I
never got a thank you card?
you did not get a thank you card stating
your name and how much you donated from the
RMHC, then there is a chance they never
received your donation. If you sent a
personal check or used a credit card, follow
up to see if the payment went through. If
you are concerned, feel free to email us or
What will we do with the “spare change?”
“Spare change” is a really bad term for it, though I (Velma) mistakenly have used it before in conversation myself. Truth is there is no spare change. The
tally is what we donated to RMHC – $11,037.22. It is their money now, no matter what we do. Getting the room in Apolo’s name is really more like a gift the RMHC is willing to give as thanks for our efforts. We really aren’t buying anything.
we were able to raise more than the
projected $10,000, the RMHC has given us a
$500 paver – a large brick of sorts that will lead up to the
new house. The paver will represent all of us as this project was meant to
be in the first place. It will be engraved with
