Q2 Castle Ward) 1854, John and Rachel were living at New Winning at the 1861 census with their three children, John was a Coal Miner, aged 35, born Newburn, they moved from Newburn to Ryton between 1861 and 1867, John died 7 August 1879 Stella, Durham aged 53(1), Rachel was a widow, aged 47, living with son Edward and her four younger children at Addison, Ryton in 1881; at the 1901 census she was still at 4 Addison Colliery, Ryton (3 doors from bro-in-law Thomas) aged 67 with 2 sons and grand daughter Elizabeth Jane (issue-see below)

  • THOMAS SWINBURN, born c.1832 Kenton near Gosforth, Northumberland; Coal Miner; married 4 November 1854 All Saints, Whickham(2) MARY MUSGROVE, born c. 1833 Newburn; they are on the 1861 census at New Winning, Northumberland with their 2 eldest children; they moved to Ryton between 1862-1872; on 1881 census at Addison, Ryton with 5 of their children; on 1901 census at 1 Addison Colliery, Ryton with 2 children; (issue-see below) their youngest son Thomas died on 16 May 1904 aged 24 and Thomas died just over 2 months later on 23 July and Mary followed soon after on 25 September, they are buried together at Ryton Old Cemetery, Gateshead (see picture), the inscription reads: Thomas Swinburn who died on July 23rd 1904 aged 69 years also Mary Swinburn beloved wife of the above who died on September 25th 1904 aged 70 years also Thomas Swinburn youngest son of the above who died on May 16th 1904 aged 25 years
