Hatchling Ornate Box Turtle
Permission for hatchling by Hatchling Haven
Adult Ornate box turtles are mostly insectivorous. Meaning they would prefer insects more than anything else. Ornates are one of the hardest specimens to keep alive in captivity. They do no tfair well in captivity. They require a hollow log to hide in and a shallow bathing pool because they are not the greatest swimers. They need soft dort and tall grass to hide under.
Ornates are the easiest to sex of all box turtles I beleive. Males will have a green head, red eyes, orange arms, and a thick tail. However Bubba, my ornate male, has a very colorfull head but an inch and a half long tail. So there are variouse exceptions. The females shell is often more domed shape than the males for egg development. See my Sex determinationsection for more help.
