For those not familiar with Deadlands, a brief explanation (and I hope don't butcher it up too badly). Deadlands is a role-playing game set in an alternate 1870s American West. History was more or less like the one we know until the Battle of Gettysburg. At the end of the battle, a group of mysterious (and 100% evil) beings called the Reckoners were able to affect our world. One of the first things they did was to cause the dead at Gettysburg to rise and attack the soldiers. In 1868, a massive earthquake struck California, shattering the coast into a series of flooded canyons called the Great Maze. The earthquake revealed a coal-like substance called ghost rock, which could burn longer and hotter than coal. Another result of the Reckoners being reawakened is the increase of arcane energies to be used. Their plan seems to be to cultivate fear (which has a sort of background count) by judicious use of various supernatural nasties until it reaches a level where they can walk the Earth. By the 1870s, the Civil War is still continuing (though it's in a bit of a Cold War-like state). A number of arcane types have emerged, the major four being: Hucksters, general type sorcerers who have discovered the mystic secrets encoded in Hoyle's Book of Games; Mad Scientists, who create bizarre steamed-powered devices that run on ghost rock; Blessed, religious types that perform Biblical style miracles; and Indian Shamans, who perform rituals to gain the aid of nature spirits.
