SIGMA KAPPA believes that serving others and improving our communities is important to personal development. SIGMA KAPPA encourages its members to become involved in community service and philanthropic projects.
The SIGMA KAPPA FOUNDATION was incorporated in 1989 to enhance our educational and philanthropic programs. The Foundation makes it possible for members and other friends to support these programs through tax deductible gifts.
Through the Foundation, SIGMA KAPPA supports a program of gerontology (study of aging), the first program of its kind to receive support from a sorority. Since 1984, alumnae and collegiate chapters of SIGMA KAPPA have become one of the country's leading contributors to Alzheimer's Disease research and education. "Inherit the Earth" ties together the Sorority's interest in older people with its concerns for the environment in a program which teams senior citizens with collegians and alumnae to address environmental issues and educate others.
In honor of our founders and their special relationship with the state of Maine, the SIGMA KAPPA FOUNDATION also supports the Maine Seacoast Misssion. The Mission's ship, The Sunbeam, brings needed supplies, as well as news of the outside world, to the isolated communities along the Maine seacoast.
The Foundations has produced an educational video dealing with Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementia. The primary purpose of this video is to educate our members to the facts surrounding this dreaded disease and its affect on people of all ages regardless of race or gender.
