The Unofficial Jobie-To-English Dictionary*

Being a beautiful sorority organization with a lot of traditions, we have some terms and names that aren't used everyday. The purpose of this page is just to put some of the Job's Daughters lingo into layman's terms. Let me know if you're confused by a term that's not covered here...

Job:
Not what pays the rent, but a book from the Bible. The book of Job is an age old story about keeping your wits about you during times of crisis. Not easy...especially when you're a teenager! (Job is pronounced with a long "O" sound.)

Bethel:
1) Biblical term for "meeting place". 2) Room that Job's Daughters hold their meetings in. 3) A local Job's Daughters chapter/troop. (example: Bethel #49, Warren RULES!)

Honored Queen:
President in Job's Daughters. Big Cheese. Head Honcho. Grand Pubah. You get the idea...

PHQ:
aka- "Past Honored Queen"- a Past President in Job's Daughters. After a girl finishes her term as Honored Queen, she has earned the title of "PHQ" and the privilege to use the title in all correspondence and receive honors as a PHQ.

Senior and Junior Princess:
Senior and Junior Vice President.

Guide and Marshal:
Elected offices before Junior and Senior Princess. (See: The "Line")

The "Line":
The "Big Time" for a Jobie. The elected offices, listed above, that are the path up to Honored Queen (H.Q.). While in the Line, a girl prepares for her term as H.Q. by performing the individual duties of each Line office.

Recorder:
Secretary. She writes down the minutes (aka takes notes of each meeting) and keeps track of the records- of meetings, activities, etc.

Messengers:
Initiation team. Five girls who each tell a part of the story of Job to new members when they join.

Ritual:
Our script. The little purple book that outlines our procedures and has our lines in it for meetings and initiations. For you curious or skeptical types, our Ritual is on file at the Library of Congress.

Initiation:
The special ceremony in which a girl becomes a Job's Daughter. It is a beautiful ceremony with nothing embarrassing or harmful in it.

Installation:
The biggest night of the term! Held once every six months, this is the night that everyone in the bethel gets a new office and the new Honored Queen is crowned. Bethel installations are open to the public. Be sure to dress nice, it's a snazzy formal affair!

J.D. to Bee:
Our program for 8 & 9 year olds who want to become Job's Daughters. They get to go to bethel fun activities (but not to meetings yet) and learn about Job's while they are waiting to join when they turn ten. Their mascot is the bumblebee (buzzzzz...)! In Bethel #49, our J.D. to Bee club- the girls get to hang out, do crafts, and all kinds of fun stuff just for them! Check out their own club page!

Bethel Guardian:
The head adult adviser of the bethel (like a Scout Leader in Girl Scouts). She oversees the activities of the bethel and the council. This is one busy lady, but never too busy for the girls! Some people would say our Bethel Guardian is crazy! She is crazy...about Job's Daughters! ;)

The Bethel Guardian Council:
A group of trained adult volunteers who advise the bethel. The council is led by and includes the Bethel Guardian. Each Council Member has a specific area of focus in the bethel (for example- the Treasurer keeps track of bethel finances).

Grand Bethel:
1) The state or jurisdiction level of Job's Daughters. 2) Our annual state convention. (Four days away from home with a couple hundred other Jobies just like you!)

Grand Bethel Girl:
A member who has been chosen to serve the state as an officer or representative for a one year term. (a BIG honor!)

Miss Job's Daughter:
A member who, through a series of written tests and a pageant, is selected to represent Job's Daughters in her state for one year. (also a big honor!)

Supreme Bethel:
1) The international governing level of Job's Daughters. 2) The annual international convention. (A trip away from home to meet thousands of Jobies just like you from places like the Philippines, Canada, Australia and Brazil! Great for practicing your Portuguese!)
