~ Orpheus the Betta ~

This is my Betta. I named him Orpheus, after a song, "Blue Orpheus"
A Betta is a "Betta Splendens" also known as a Siamese Fighting Fish
Orpheus is a male

Betta Splendens come from slow current, sluggish places like ponds, ditches, swamps and even rice fields in places like Thailand and Malaysia. The oxygen content of the water in these areas is low, and the beta has evolved a secondary "labyrinth organ" to actually breathe by rising to the surface for a gulp of air. For this reason, Siamese Fighting Fish do not require the same aeration and filtration systems of most aquariums.

That is why people keep them in bowls. Like this:

But Orpheus is spoiled

And he has tons of live plants
to swim in and out of and to
give him a sense of security

Male Bettas build bubble nests
like this,for the female to
lay eggs in. This one is under
the leaf of a Banana Plant.
There's something in his spit
that makes the bubbles not
pop for about a day.
