| Is a cockatiel the right pet for you? *A cockatiel's average lifespan is about 15-20 years. Sometimes they can reach 30 years.Will you be devoted to give this bird a forever home? *A cockatiel needs exercise everyday. Will you be able to let it fly around at least two hours a day. Or if the wings are clipped, let it walk around, sit on your shoulder, etc.? (Never unsupervised of course) *Cockatiels do have dander. Please cheak with your doctor if you have allergies to find out if you can do fine with a cockatiel. Are you able to do fine with a cockatiel? *A cockatiel needs to be fed and watered daily. Do you have the time to do this? Will you remember to do this every day? *You will need to purchase a cage that is AT LEAST 24"x 24"x24". The spaces in the bars should not be wider than 3/4 of an inch.The bigger the cage, the better. Will you be able to afford this or a larger cage? Do you have the space for such a large cage? *If the cockatiel gets ill, will you be able to afford a visit to the avian vet? Sometimes it can be pricey. *You will need to change the paper at the bottom of the cage once or twice a day and clean the whole cage weekly. The cleaner you keep the birds' enviorment, the less chance it has of getting ill. Do you have the time to do this? *Do you have a place to place the cage? Away from airconditioners, heaters, windows (drafts can make birds ill), other pets, and direct sunlight. *The cockatiel is a social animal. Will you have the time to spend quality time with it or get it a buddy? If the answer to all these questions are YES. Then, a cockatiel could be the right pet for you! |
